As a local you’ll know where your local bank is so we won’t list all the Mid North & Clare Valley branches, but here are a few in one of the bigger population centers;
ANZ Branch Port Augusta: it’s situated along Commercial Street and you can buy travel money in all major currencies.
BankSA Branch: With a location along 53 Commercial Rd, anyone who wants travel money and other banking services are served in this branch. It’s conveniently located and you can easily access it.
Credit Union SA: This bank offers a wide range of banking services and is located along 25/27 Commercial Road, Port Augusta. It also serves people from adjacent towns.
Elizabeth Shopping Centre
It’s a sad state of affairs but the closest foreign exchange stores to the Mid North and Clare Valley regions are the Travelex and Travel Money Oz stores in the Elizabeth Shopping Centre.
However, if you’re coming that far why not go a little further and get the best rates in the Adelaide CBD. This is where the competition is highest so you’re bound to get the best rates. The downside of banks for FX services;
Long-distance: In some instances, you may require to spend money and your precious time travelling to an adjacent town to buy foreign currency. You will have to forgo your day’s work. This can be a serious inconvenience, especially to a busy person.
Expensive service: The rate that banks charge is incredibly high. They do this because they have a high overhead cost to recover from their business, which includes rent and employee expenses.
Lack of flexibility: Banks in the Mid North area, South Australia have fixed working hours. This can be a source of inconvenience to anyone who is unable to buy foreign currency at the stipulated working hours.
Summary
Residents of the Mid North and Clare Valley regions of South Australia are shortchanged (no pun intended) when it comes to currency exchange options. The banks are the primary option but their rates are terrible and opening hours often leave something to be desired. The only alternative (until now) has been to visit Adelaide.
